And it's unlikely that your organisation is totally immune to stress. According to the Health and Safety Executive and the CBI:
- 20% of all British workers are VERY or EXTREMELY stressed
- 500,000 workers are being made ill because of stress
- The average absence due to stress is 30.9 working days
- Stress related absence costs companies over £600 per employee
- Workplace stress costs industry over £12 Billion every year
In addition to this chronic stress has been linked to cardiac disease, depression, substance abuse, digestive problems, diabetes and even obesity.
And even short exposure to stress can significantly reduce the intellectual and creative capability of your employees. So if you're paying your staff to think, you must provide a stress free environment if they are going to perform at the level you need.
Employers have a liability under:
- the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 - to assess the risk of stress related ill health due to work related activities
- the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 - to take measures to control that risk
